The Picture of Dorian Gray

In this post, I would like to quote some of the interesting lines(out of many) I came across reading Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray.

  • “Conscience and cowardice are really the same thing,Basil. Conscience is the trade name of the firm. That is all.”
  • “Poets are not so scrupulous as you are. They know how useful passion is for publication. Nowadays a broken heart will run to many editions.”
  • “You know more than you think you know, just as you know less than you want to know.”
  • Humanity takes itselftoo seriously It is he world’s original sin.If the cavenman had known how to laugh, History would have been different.”

I love this line in the preface: ‘The nineteenth century dislike of Realism is the rage of Caliban seeing his own face in a glass.’

      Another nice one .
“The only artists I have ever known, who are personally delightful, are bad artists. Good artists exist simply in what they are. A great poet, a really great poet,is the most unpoetical of all creatures. But inferior poets are absolutely fascinating. The worse their rhythms are, the more picturesque they look. The mere fact of having published a book of second-rate sonnets makes a man quite irrestible. He lives the poetry that he cannot write. The others write the poetry that they dare not realize.”
